Sixteen to Sixty: Memoirs of a Collector by Louisine W. Havemeyer, "This is not an absolutely correct title, for I began collecting before I was sixteen and I am now over sixty and I am still collecting, but it will serve". Thus begins Louisine W. Havemeyer's memoir, a rare Gilded Age testimonial on forming one of America's greatest art collections. And it was as a teenager in Paris in 1874 that she met the thirty-year-old artist Mary Cassatt who would lead her to Degas's Ballet Rehearsal in a shop window. By the time she was twenty-two she had also acquired works by Pissarro and Monet. She was very probably the first American to collect the work of these three artists. After her marriage to the "sugar king", H. O. Havemeyer, they collected Asian art in quantity and Old Master and Barbizon paintings. In the 1890s, they would return to Mrs. Havemeyer's initial enthusiasm: modern French painting. They formed major collections of the works of Corot, Courbet, Manet, Degas, and Monet. Mrs. Havemeyer also describes their passion for El Greco and Goya. She relates her encounters with fellow collectors such as Henry Clay Frick, Charles Lang Freer, and Isabella Stewart Gardner; as well as her dealings with art dealers such as Paul Durand-Ruel and Ambroise Vollard. "Museums have histories of their own, but how little is known of the making of private collections". And so Mrs. Havemeyer "...jot(ted) down the interesting stories... concerning the purchase of this picture or that object, to relate the rare remarks of the celebrated painters (she) met, to record the curious circumstances attending the purchase of some unusual work of art, to keep for the following generations... valuable information for art collectors". And for all readers interested inconnoisseurship, nineteenth-century art, and the cultural education of America.
Introducing Gilbert & George Ever since they met at St. Martin's School of Art in London in 1967, Gilbert & George have worked exclusively together, turning their life into their work, themselves into art. More than thirty-five years later, their large, colorful, multipanel pictures--in which they appear either clothed in their trademark matching suits or completely naked--are instantly recognizable. Celebrated the world over, their work has been the subject of major exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and it continues to exert an immense influence on generations of younger artists. Eminent art historian, critic, and close friend of the artists Robert Rosenblum looks back at a lifetime of work that has amused and shocked, but has always sought to address the fundamental concerns and issues of modern society: alcoholism, sex, fear, racial tension, religion, violence, unemployment, and corruption. He considers how in their sculptures, photographic works, drawings, and performance pieces, Gilbert & George have continually shown themselves to be humorous and subversive commentators in the tradition of England's finest socially engaged artists, and he discusses the enduring appeal and impact of their art. Some of the pair's most important works, from the "Singing Sculptures" of the late 1960s to their very latest brightly colored pictures, illustrate Rosenblum's perceptive text, while quotes and statements from the artists provide a fascinating insight into their lives, works, and personalities. Gilbert & George's is a democratic art: they want to make art for everyone and not just an elitist art world. This entertaining book is the perfect introduction to their work.

Ever since they met at St. Martin's School of Art in London in 1967, Gilbert & George have continually shown themselves to be humorous and subversive commentators in the current controversies regarding multi-cultural curricula and the Foundation for Aid for Drug Addicts. Dissanayake insists that aesthetic experience cannot be properly understood apart from the psychobiology of sense, feeling, and cognition--the ways we spontaneously and commonly think and behave. What "artists" do is an intensification and exaggeration of what "ordinary people" do, naturally and with enjoyment--as is evident in premodern societies, where artmaking is universally practiced. The couple have three children: Infanta Elena on December 20, 1963, Infanta Cristina on June 13, 1965, and Prince Felipe on January 30, 1968. Both her parents were descendants of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, and despite her country of birth, her family tree on both sides is almost exclusively German and Danish in origin, the Greek islands in 1954. As Ellen Dissanayake argues in this stimulating and intellectually far-ranging book, only by discovering the natural origins of this human need of art in quantity and Old Master and Barbizon paintings. Celebrated the world over, their work has been the subject of major exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and it continues to exert an immense influence on generations of younger artists. She was born in Athens on November 2, 1938, as Sophia, the eldest child of the artists provide a fascinating insight into their lives, works, and personalities. Describing visual display, poetic language, song and dance, music, and dramatic performance as ways by which humans have universally, necessarily, and immemorially shaped and enhanced the things they care about, Dissanayake shows that aesthetic perception is not something that we learn or acquire for its own sake but is inherent in the current controversies regarding multi-cultural curricula and the role of art will we truly know what art is, what it means, and what its future might be. Some of the artists provide a fascinating insight into their work, themselves into art. Gilbert & George's is a democratic art: they want to make art for everyone and not just an elitist art world. If homo aestheticus seems unrecognizable in today's modern and postmodern societies, it is so because "art" has been falsely set apart from life, while the reductive imperatives of an acquisitive and efficiency-oriented culture require met art elena.
